When to use it

What a warehouse can do for you

  • Containers arrive faster than you can ship the goods out.
  • You want stock in Florida or Texas instead of shipping everything from one coast.
  • Freight has to change trucks without being stored.
  • Storage

Pallet positions by the month, with receiving and release on your instruction.
  • Cross-dock

Inbound freight is sorted and reloaded within hours or a day, without storage.
  • Distribution

Outbound orders to stores and customers by LTL, truckload or parcel.
  • Transload

Ocean containers unloaded into domestic trailers near the port.

How a shipment runs

Step by step, with nothing off the record.

  1. Tell us what you store

Pallets, items, how fast they turn, and any special handling.

  2. Facility proposed

The operator, the location and its terms, before you commit.

  3. Receiving

Freight is counted against your advance notice and a warehouse receipt is issued.

  4. Storage

Inventory status on request, and in the portal once it opens.

  5. Release

Each outbound order becomes a shipment with its own milestones.

What the record shows

  1. Order created

The shipment is on the record: origin, destination, freight details and requested dates.

  2. Pickup scheduled

A pickup window is confirmed with the shipping location, and the carrier is named.

  3. Driver assigned

The carrier has named the driver and the equipment for the pickup, so the shipper can check both at the dock.

  4. Picked up

The freight is loaded and the carrier has signed for it. Custody passes from the shipper to the carrier.

  5. Origin hub

The freight is at the carrier terminal, cargo gateway or port where it is consolidated or accepted for the main leg.

  6. In transit

The main leg is under way, with position or status updates along the route and any exception reported with its cause.

  7. Customs processing

A licensed customs broker has the entry in hand: documents checked, declaration filed, release awaited.

  8. Destination hub

The freight is at the last terminal or gateway before the delivery address, released for the final leg.

  9. Out for delivery

The freight is on the delivery vehicle, with a delivery window or appointment.

  10. Delivered

The consignee has signed for the freight. Custody passes to the consignee and proof of delivery goes on the record.

Documents

The paperwork, and what each document is for.

Every document is attached to the shipment record, so nobody has to ask for it twice.

  • Advance shipping notice

What is arriving, on which load, so it can be counted against something.
  • Warehouse receipt

The operator's acknowledgment of what it received and in what condition.
  • Inventory report

What is on hand, by item and location.

Responsibilities

Who does what.

A shipment passes through several hands. Each stage has one party responsible for it, and the record names that party.
